  • Ecological restoration in Alia, Cáceres, Spain

    España · Reforestación

The ecological restoration of a forested area in Alía, Cáceres (Spain) was done between January2023 and May 2023 in one plot. 19 species were planted, consisting of: Populus nigra, Ficus carica, Acer pseudoplatanus, Castanea sativa, Morus nigra, Prunus dulcis, Quercus pyrenaica, Taxus baccata, Acer monspessulanum, Quercus rubra, Prunus mahaleb, Genista scorpius, Genista umbellata, Lavandula angustifolia, Lavandula stoechas, Cupressus sempervirens, Cupressus arizonica, Genista cinerea and Prunus avium. All species are native to the region and are adapted to the local conditions. Previous individuals of Pinus spp. and Eucalyptus globulus were removed to make space for the new selection of species. Four participants (excluding landowner and Life Terra team) were present during the proffesional planting that was carried out. The planting aims to enhance biodiversity, have a positive effect on soils and provide resources to the owner. The landowner also provided irrigation and recovered historical local varieties of grapes for wine production. Furthermore, there are plans to build a sustainable eco-hostel in the plot, providing a space for recreation and environmental education as visitors will be introduced to the plantation and its benefits and also to observe the local species of animals.

  • Ecological Restoration in Santa Clara a Velha, Phase II

    Portugal · Reforestación

The Life Terra Foundation closed 2023 with a great ecological restoration effort in Santa Clara a Velha, Odemira (Portugal). Contuining the work done in previous seasons, 38.000 trees of 6 different species were planted. This area, caracterized by its extreme temperature conditions and low rainfall, has also suffered from the invasion of Eucalyptus. When in monoculture, this species has the capacity to exhaust soils and leave little to no space for natural regeneration. During this plantation, 10 workers participated to remove Eucalyptus individuals and plant a mix of autochtonous species to enhance biodiversity and recover the fertility of soils. This plantation also allows for native plants to colonize the space between the lines, doubling the restoration efforts. To ensure a high survival rate of the new saplings, the land was previously prepared using machinery, while the plantation was done by hand by the workers. Furthermore, as part of our long term commitment with restoration, we planted a mixture of species that provides fruits and pines to the landowener in order to provide an economic revenue. This revenue can be then used to assure proper maintance of the plantation.

  • Santa Isabel Water and Soil Credits

    México · Agua

Activities conducted in the Soil regeneration project in Soto, Ángel Trías, Chihuahua, included drawing contour lines across a 13.4-hectare area using a laser level to prepare for ditch opening. This contouring followed a board ditch design, with a 6-meter separation between lines, to facilitate soil retention and expedite water capture and infiltration. Soil works conducted included excavating a trench board with dimensions: 30 cm deep and 40 cm wide. This trench was designed to enhance rainwater retention and infiltration, as well as to create access roads for various reforestation tasks. Finally, 4,232 Prosopis glandulosa (Mesquite) plants were transported to the project site for planting.
